Not intending to sound callous here, but was that the first of your boxes to get taken? It doesn't mean that someone is running around pilfering all the boxes in the area. (I picture Dirk Dasterdly and Muttley running around, going heeheehee all over the place :) )It happens, doesn't mean you should not rehide it farther off the trail. Also, you don't want to scare others who are new at this into thinking if they hide one it could be this phelon's next target.
Into every life a little rain must fall (or should we change it to "into every box"?)

Sorry, I'm just getting caught up in my mail reading. You said the box was
under some train tracks, are they still in use? If so, could the vibrations
caused by a train going over have caused the box to come loose? Also, there
is no way to know if the person's who took the box were malicious or just
curious. Who knows, maybe they will visit the site, find out that the idea
is to *Leave* the box in place and then they will come back to return it?
Stranger things have happened :-)
